You don’t need to be new or fresh or innovative

People, designers especially, worry a lot about being original.

STOP.

Instead, worry about being novel. 

Let me explain...

I've ridden BMX for most of my life. Like 20+ years now. I've spent all of those years thinking BMX racing was invented in the 60s/70s and BMX freestyle in the 80s. 

So for 20+ years I thought the concept of a professional trick rider started in the 80s.

Then I saw this video by Phil Edwards about professional trick riders (fancy riding) in the '30s. Mind blown.

So don't worry so much about being new.

Worry about being new to someone.

PS. Another incredible and relevant video is Everything is a Remix. I’ve probably watched it 10 times.

PPS. Whoaaa, in the act of searching for that link I discovered that the video is entirely new. It’s the same concept and same style but using new examples. Which might be the most meta thing ever.
