Great branding is true, not a trick

Ever noticed how bad movies always look great in the trailer?

The disappointment of a terrible movie with a great trailer sucks because it feels like you've been tricked.

Tricked is not the lasting impression you want to leave.

A misleading trailer is like a brand getting a lot of attention without having the credibility to back it up.

Like the whole Solo Stoves fiasco that happened a few months ago.

Lots of attention from lots of people for smokeless fire pits, camping stoves, and accessories doesn’t make any sense.

The Snoop x Solo Stoves thing only went viral because of headlines and spectacle. Not because of real customers.

Being aware of a brand for the wrong reasons is not success.

Maybe the huge general awareness brand campaigns really only help brands like Nike, Apple, Coke, etc.

Yes, they are great brands and great at branding. But most companies shouldn't be emulating their actions.

I love basketball, but it would be pretty dumb of me to operate in the world as if I am LeBron James.

  1. I don't have the same skill.

  2. I don't have the same resources.

  3. I don't have the same budget.
