No words. No letters. Know meaning.

Think about the peace sign. It has no words. It has no letters. We know what it means.

For Americans (and probably others) there are even multiple versions of the peace sign.

You have the symbol ☮️

And you have a hand gesture ✌️

No matter how "confusing" a corporate PR department could spin it, it's no problem for us to know two different symbols can mean the same thing. Or that the same symbols can mean multiple things. (so why are some crying about the legibility of cursive?)

Making a meaningful symbol like this is hard.

Not technically hard (it's pretty freakin easy to draw that symbol or show two fingers).

It's hard to make a symbol meaningful because it takes time. And consistency. and most importantly, the agreement of others.

You have to consistently present the symbol to the world, tell and/or show them what it stands for, and hope everyone is onboard.

The peace sign has had, like 60 years or so to teach us what it means.

That's why it's so wild to me when iconic logos get scrapped.

You've done all that work. Built up all that meaning. And you want to start over? Really?!

That really only makes sense if the symbol you've created has ended up meaning something undesirable.

And that only happens if you teach the world that you're undesirable.

So stop doing undesirable things.
