Nike's logo: Communication or identification?

Here's a really good question from a list member (details removed for anonymity) in response to a previous email (Do not expect your logo to tell the world what you do).

...do the Swoosh and Jumpman logos meet this test? I would say both of these communicate something about each of these brands. Do you agree?

No.

Well, okay, kinda.

Yes, both of the logos communicate something.

But they don't communicate something about the brands. If they did, the Nike logo would be a shoe.

But these logos DO communicate something about the people buying and wearing them.

And it's one of the main reasons a lot of people are buying and wearing the brands at all.

Please reply and let me know what you think the Swoosh and/or the Jumpman communicate about the person wearing them. I would love to know. And, I have an idea for a future topic.

PS. The Jumpman kinda communicates something if you know who Michael Jordan is. But without that context, it's really just a human figure, legs stretched wide, holding a ball. Or a plate.

PPS. Please, always feel free to reply and let me know if you think I'm wrong or full of shit or just want to talk about Seinfeld or something.
