A brand experience worth buying, even on clearance

An old friend of the list sent in this great response to an old email.

The original email was essentially about how Nintendo competes with Playstation and other game console companies despite having underpowered hardware.

Nintendo sells a unique experience. And that unique experience is meaningful to some people.

Well, here's some proof (slightly edited for brevity):

“...Flash forward to senior year of high school. and I noticed one day in the Electronics department that there's a bunch of N64s marked down on clearance. Normally around $100, now tagged at like $35, and I just pick one up and buy it. and then buy GoldenEye. and nothing else.

I wanted that game for years and I finally got it. It didn't matter that the system was like 5 years old at that point. I still wanted it, and I got it.

You think that as a senior in high school you should be focused on bigger things (lol) but I was so happy with my "new" N64 and GoldenEye. It's like I didn't have a care in the world beyond that system.”

No mention of the graphics...

Or processor speeds...

Or any other hardware specs.

He only mentions how it made him feel:

"...I didn't have a care in the world..." Now, how's that for a brand experience?
